The Hellenistic Period TheHellenisticandtheHasmoneanperiods(332–63BCE)leftfewremainstovisit.Thestory oftheindependentJewishKingdom(140–63BCE)ruledbytheHasmoneandynastyis intriguing.TheyexpandedtheircontrolfromJerusalemtoalmosttheentirelandofIsraeland partsofTransjordan.TheHasmoneans’independencecametoanendbytheRomanconquest ofJudealedbyPompeyin63BCE,whichbroughtJudeaintotheRomansphereofinfluence.The vassalkingsoftheHasmoneanswerereplacedbyKingHerodin37BCE.MostoftheHasmonean constructions were rebuilt by King Herod, and his legacy is what remains visible.The Herodian PeriodHerodtheGreatwasnominatedastheRomanclientkingofJudea.Herod,anEdomitewho convertedtoJudaism,wasknownasthebigbuilderoftheLandofIsrael.HeintroducedRoman technologiesandarchitecturesandbuiltthemagnificentTempleinJerusalem,anenormous harborinCaesarea,andalargemonumentattheCaveofthePatriarchsinHebron.Herodalso built:aqueducts,theaters,amphitheaters,hippodromes,palaces,andtemplesinCaesarea, Samaria,Jerusalem,Jericho,Herodium,andOmrit.HerodalsoreconstructedtheHasmonean desertfortresses:Sartaba(Alexandrion),Kypros,Qarantal(Mt.ofTemptation),Hyrcania,and Masada. Most of his architectural projects can be seen and visited with great wonder.The Roman PeriodTheRomanEmpireruledthecountryforaboutanadditional250years.Duringthattime, Christianityhademergeddespitethepersecutions,whileJudaismwasacceptedasalegitimate religionuntilthetimeoftheJewishrevolts.TheGreatRevolt(66–73AD),theJewishDiaspora Revolt(theKitosWar,115–117AD),andtheBarKochbaRevolt(132–136AD)changedthe Jewishreality.JerusalemwaslostandwasforbiddentoJewsforcenturiestocome.TheJewish TempleinJerusalemwasdestroyed,aswereotherJewishstrongholdssuchasGamla,Gush Halav,Yodfat,Herodium,andMasada.ManyoftheJewsdiedorwereexiled;othersmovednorth to the new, expanding Jewish center in the Galilee. TheunrestintheremoteprovinceofJudea(fromthencalledtheprovinceofPalaestina) broughtadisproportionalnumberofRomanlegions.TheestablishmentoftheRomanarmy resultedintherebuildingofJerusalemastheRomancityofAeliaCapitolinaandtheconstruction ofroads,aqueducts,theaters,amphitheaters,hippodromes,publicbaths,temples,andmilitary legioncamps.TheRomanlandmarkscanbeseentodayinCaesarea,BeitGovrin,Ashkelon,Beit Shean, Tiberias, Banias, Dor, Kadesh, Avdat, Hamat Gader, Zippori and many other places.The Byzantine PeriodDuringthe4thcenturyAD,theChristianityturnedfromapersecutedcultbytheRoman Empire,intotheonlyofficialreligionofthereplacingByzantineEmpire.ThelandofJesus becometheHolyLandandmanychurcheswerespreadingalloverthecountryandbecomea centerforpilgrims.MostoftheByzantinechurchesweredestroyedin614ADduringthePersian Sasanian conquest and partially rebuilt short time before the Muslims invasion of 636 AD. ThecitiesofCaesarea,BeitShean,ZipporiandJerusalemaswellastheNabateanscitiesof Shivta,AvdatandMamshitflourishedduringtheByzantineperiod.Inallthecitiesmentioned aboveandinnumerousothersitesthroughoutthecountry,youcanseeexamplesofByzantine churches and urban architecture.
